The article provides a historicalpedagogical analysis of the life path and scientific-pedagogical legacy of the first doctor of pedagogical sciences in oligophrenic pedagogy in the then Soviet Union, Professor Oleksiy Mykolayovych Graborov. The period of the scientist’s activity before the revolution of 1917 is analyzed. His role in the creation of the first auxiliary educational institutions and the training of the first cadres of special education teachers is revealed. These processes are revealed in the context of the formation of a positive public opinion regarding the education of children with intellectual disabilities. The processes of social political direction caused by the post-revolutionary eventsmade it possible to create a state network of special schools for various nosologies of children with disorders of psychophysical development. O.M. Graborov played a significant role in the creation of state special schools, the initiation of teacher training for special schools, and the formation of scientific opinion. For many years, Professor O.M. Graborov has widely cooperated with the defectology community of Ukraine. He constantly provided scientific and methodological assistance to the employees of the Research Institute of Defectology of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, which was established in Kharkiv and later transferred to Kyiv. This is evidenced by the fact that he first published his original scientific and methodological work «Defectology» in Ukraine and,
moreover, in the Ukrainian language. The professor had close ties with a number of Ukrainian psychological and pedagogical publications. In particular, he published a number of thorough articles in the Ukrainian magazine «The Way of Education». For many years, he cooperated with the faculty of defectology of the Kyiv Pedagogical Institute named after O.M. Gorky (now thу faculty of special and inclusive education of the Ukrainian State University name after Mykhailo Drahomanov). The article outlines the ways and prospects of using the scientific heritage of Professor Oleksiy Mykolayovych Graborov in modern special psychological and pedagogical science and practice. The terminology in the article is presented in that dimension.
